Where you stay shapes your whole trip to the Mexican Caribbean. The three main bases, Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, each put you closer to a different mix of parks, beaches and nightlife. There is no single best choice, only the right fit for your travel style.
Cancun
Cancun is the easiest arrival and the best base if you want big resorts, a long hotel zone beach and Ventura Park within reach. It is the most family friendly for first timers, with the widest range of all inclusive resorts. The trade off is the 60 to 75 minute drive to the Riviera Maya eco-parks.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is the most central base for park hopping. Xcaret is minutes away, Xel-Ha and Xplor are a short drive, and the town itself has the walkable Fifth Avenue, restaurants and the ferry to Cozumel. It suits travelers who want a mix of beach, parks and town life without a car.
Tulum
Tulum is the bohemian, design driven option, with jungle and beachfront hotels and the famous clifftop ruins. It is the furthest from the eco-parks (45 to 60 minutes), so it works best if cenotes, beach clubs and atmosphere matter more to you than ticking off every park.
Resorts with park access included
A handful of resorts bundle unlimited access to the Xcaret group of parks into the room rate: Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Hotel Xcaret Arte and Occidental at Xcaret Destination. If your trip is built around the eco-parks, these can work out cheaper than buying separate daily tickets, and they remove all the transfer logistics.
