Almost every visitor to the Mexican Caribbean lands at Cancun International Airport (CUN), the second busiest airport in Mexico. From there, the water parks and eco-parks spread south along Highway 307, the single coastal road that connects Cancun, Playa del Carmen, the Riviera Maya and Tulum. Knowing the distances up front saves you both money and a wasted morning.

From Cancun Airport

Ventura Park, inside the Cancun hotel zone, is about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport. Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Xplor on the Riviera Maya are 50 to 75 minutes south. The cheapest way out of the airport is the official ADO bus to downtown Cancun or Playa del Carmen, then a colectivo (shared van) or taxi. Private transfers cost more but drop you at the door, which matters if you are travelling with children and gear.

From the Cancun Hotel Zone

If you are staying in the Cancun hotel zone, Ventura Park is walkable or a short taxi from most resorts. For the Riviera Maya parks, the R1 and R2 public buses run frequently between the hotel zone and downtown, where you connect to ADO buses heading south. Many park tickets include an optional round trip transfer that is often cheaper than arranging your own taxi.

From Playa del Carmen and Tulum

Playa del Carmen is the most central base. Xcaret is 10 to 15 minutes south, Xel-Ha and Xplor around 30 to 45 minutes. From Tulum, the eco-parks are 45 to 60 minutes north. Colectivos along Highway 307 are the local secret: they run constantly, cost a few dollars and stop at the park entrances if you ask the driver.

Should you rent a car?

A rental car gives you freedom to combine a park with a cenote or a quieter beach, but parking, tolls and the notorious insurance up-sell add up. For a single park day, the included transfer or a colectivo is usually simpler and cheaper. For a week of independent exploring, a car pays off.
