The 3 factors that decide your best time

Every month in Mexico has tradeoffs across three variables:

  • Weather. Temperature, rain, humidity and hurricane risk.
  • Crowds. How busy the parks feel, queue times, beach space.
  • Prices. Ticket prices, hotel rates and flight costs.

No month wins on all three. Below is the honest monthly breakdown.

Month by month

January

Weather: perfect (25 to 28 Celsius, dry). Crowds: very high (post Christmas). Prices: peak. Good if you do not mind queues and high prices.

February

Weather: great (25 to 29 Celsius). Crowds: high. Prices: peak. Valentines week is expensive. Mid and late February are slightly quieter.

March

Weather: excellent (26 to 30 Celsius). Crowds: very high (Spring break US). Prices: peak. Avoid mid March if possible.

April

Weather: excellent (27 to 30 Celsius). Crowds: high (Easter Week is massive). Prices: peak mid month, drop after. The last week of April starts showing early deals.

May (sweet spot #1)

Weather: perfect (27 to 31 Celsius, minimal rain). Crowds: low. Prices: 15 to 20 percent below peak. The best month of the year for water parks in Mexico.

June

Weather: warm to hot (28 to 32 Celsius), rain starts but stays brief. Crowds: pick up as summer holidays start. Prices: shoulder. Good first 2 weeks, then crowds grow.

July

Weather: hot and humid (29 to 33 Celsius), afternoon rain. Crowds: high (summer holidays). Prices: peak summer.

August

Weather: hot (29 to 33 Celsius), rain. Crowds: high. Prices: peak summer. Hurricane risk starts in late August.

September (sweet spot #2 but risky)

Weather: warm (27 to 30 Celsius), moderate rain. Crowds: the lowest of the year. Prices: the lowest of the year (25 to 30 percent below peak). Hurricane risk is real, book refundable tickets.

October (sweet spot #3)

Weather: good (26 to 30 Celsius), rain tapers off. Crowds: low. Prices: 20 percent below peak. Very good overall month.

November

Weather: excellent (24 to 28 Celsius, dry). Crowds: pick up toward Thanksgiving. Prices: shoulder. Week of Thanksgiving is expensive, rest of the month is a deal.

December

Weather: great (23 to 27 Celsius). Crowds: first 2 weeks moderate, last 2 weeks extreme. Prices: lowest first half, peak second half. December 20 to January 5 is the single most crowded period of the year.

Day of week

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the quietest days at every major water park. Saturdays and Sundays draw local Mexican families from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Merida. Aim for mid week visits if your schedule allows.

Recommendation

For most international visitors: book for May or late September through October. You get near perfect weather, low crowds and 15 to 25 percent off ticket prices. Avoid December 20 to January 5 unless you are specifically there for the holidays.
