What counts as a real water park inside a resort

Most all inclusive resorts advertise a water park. Many have one slide and a splash pad. That is not a water park. For this guide, we only counted resorts with at least 3 of the following:

  • Three or more water slides of meaningful height.
  • A lazy river or tube float.
  • A dedicated kids splash zone with slides.
  • A wave pool or surf simulator.
  • Age appropriate attractions for kids 4+ and teens.

When a resort water park is enough (and when it is not)

Enough if: you want relaxation, poolside drinks, 1 or 2 slide rides and kids in the splash pad. Low effort, no logistics.

Not enough if: you want variety (cultural shows, cenotes, animal pavilions), real adventure (zip lines, amphibious vehicles), or full day activities. In that case, book a Xcaret combo ticket separately and use the resort for rest days.

Common mistakes

  • Believing the resort marketing that compares their water park to Xcaret. They do not compare.
  • Not checking if the water park is open year round (some close for maintenance in September).
  • Assuming all guest tiers have full access (some slides and zones are reserved for premium rooms).

Frequently asked questions

Moon Palace Cancun has the best water park among Mexican all inclusive resorts. It includes 6 water slides, a lazy river, a kids splash zone and multiple pools. Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres is a close second with similar facilities.

No. Even the best resort water parks are smaller than Xcaret, Xel-Ha or Xplor. Resorts are fine for 1 to 2 days of relaxation, but if water park activities are your main goal, buy a separate ticket to a Grupo Xcaret park.

A few do. Occidental at Xcaret Destination and Hotel Xcaret Mexico include unlimited park access. Most other all inclusives do not, but many offer discounted shuttle packages ($30 to $50) to Xcaret, Xel-Ha or Xplor as add ons.
