The Mexican Caribbean is a year round destination, but the experience changes a lot by season. Picking the right month and the right time of day can be the difference between a relaxed park visit and a hot, crowded one.
Weather by season
The dry season runs roughly from November to April, with warm days, lower humidity and the calmest seas. This is peak tourist season. The wet season runs from May to October, hotter and more humid with short afternoon downpours. Hurricane risk peaks in September and October, though direct hits are rare.
High season vs low season
The busiest and priciest periods are mid December to early January, Easter week and the July to August summer holidays. For thinner crowds and better rates, target late January to early April (excluding Easter) or the shoulder months of May, June, late September and November.
Sargassum seaweed
Sargassum, the brown seaweed that washes up on Caribbean beaches, is most common from roughly April to August and varies year to year. It mainly affects open ocean beaches. The eco-parks, cenotes and protected coves (such as Xel-Ha) are far less affected, which is one more reason they shine in the seaweed months.
Best time of day
Whatever the season, arrive at park opening. The first hours are cooler, the queues are short and the water is calmest. Crowds and heat both build toward midday. For cenotes, morning light is also the most beautiful. The torch lit night version of Xplor, Xplor Fuego, is the coolest and least crowded park experience of all.
